Ocean in Motion

Feel the surprising texture of a sea star, get ‘hugged’ by a sea urchin or touch a squishy sea cucumber when the Ocean in Motion comes to you! Our staff takes the ocean on the road with this special hands-on exhibit. Great for classrooms, nursing homes, daycares and festivals, the Ocean in Motion is guaranteed to make waves at any event.

Reservation Rates

Small Group/Classroom Visit (up to 30 people): 1st hour $90, each additional hour $50

Large Group/Community Fair/Event: 1st hour $180, each additional hour $150

* Applicable sales tax will be added and is not included in the program price.

* A mileage fee of $1 per mile (each-way) is charged for any Ocean in Motion visit outside a 15-mile radius of the Butterfly House & Aquarium.

Reservation Hours

Tuesday - Friday & Select Saturdays/Sundays: 9AM - Evening

* Not available during April and May due to school field trip season

RSVP Requirements

Pre-registration of at least 2 weeks is required before your 1st preferred visit date

A $50 non-refundable reservation deposit is required to confirm the reservation. (The deposit will be taken off the full price of the program.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made one month prior to the scheduled visit will only be charged the $50 reservation deposit.

Cancellations made less than one-month prior will be billed 50% of the cost of the program.

Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before a program will still be charged the full program price.

Scholarship Funding

Scholarship awards are offered based on need and availability. Award amounts range from 10% up to 100% of outreach program cost. Applications must be submitted at least one (1) month prior to scheduled outreach week to be considered.

You will be notified of the scholarship status no later than 2 weeks before the program date.

FAQs

I booked an Ocean in Motion visit... what next?

You will be contacted by an Education staff member the week before your scheduled date to review visit details. Details include location and parking, schedule for multiple classroom programs, and any other information that may be necessary.

What time will the Ocean in Motion vehicle arrive at our site?

On the day of your scheduled program, our Educators will arrive at your site approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of your visit. Please provide contact information for the person who will be available to meet our Educators and to direct them to parking and program delivery area.

Does the Ocean in Motion vehicle require any electrical hook-up?

No. The vehicle is completely self-contained and does not require any electrical hook-up at your site.

Does the Ocean in Motion Mobile Touch Cart require an electrical hook-up?

Yes, the Mobile Touch Cart will need access to an electrical outlet in the program delivery area.

Does it matter the type of floor covering in the Ocean in Motion program presentation area?

The mobile cart is designed to move best on smooth surfaces, such as tile or cement; however, traveling over some shorter carpet is okay. Shag or long-fibered carpet is not ideal. Please use discretion when planning the presentation area, as water will, most likely, end up on the floor at some point during the session.

Does the Ocean in Motion cart require any special access needs?

The mobile cart is designed to fit through most standard doorframes; however, the cart does need 1st floor access or a wheelchair accessible entrance. Keep in mind if the Ocean in Motion cart will be visiting 2nd level or higher rooms, the cart will need to be able to access the room via elevator or ramp.
