Coral Reef Restoration

Hypersensitive to climate change, “the rain forests of the sea” are disappearing from the planet at a shocking rate. According to a report by the World Resources Institute, 75% of the world’s coral reefs are in grave danger. The Butterfly House & Aquarium works with marine conservation groups to provide homes for coral species that are threatened in the wild.

The Impact

The Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) is dedicated to creating offshore nurseries and restoration programs for threatened coral species. Tens of thousands of corals are grown and maintained in multiple offshore nurseries. After a year in the nursery, corals are transferred to a degraded reef.

The ideal water temperature for the coral reefs in our aquariums is 78 degrees.

Even though they make up less than 1% of the marine environment, coral reefs are home to 25% of all fish species.

If current rates of coral bleaching continue, 60% of the world’s reefs will die over the next 30 years.
